Basavaraj Bommai Takes Oath as Chief Minister of Karnataka

Basavaraj Somappa Bommai was sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Karnataka on Wednesday, July 28, 2021, at Raj Bhavan in Bengaluru. He is an Indian politician and engineer who has served as the MP for Shiggaon since 2008. Bommai is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and has held various positions in the party and the Karnataka government.

Bommai was born on January 28, 1960, in Saundatti, Belgaum district, Karnataka. He earned a degree in civil engineering from the Karnataka Regional Engineering College (KREC) in Surathkal, Mangalore. After graduating, Bommai worked as an engineer for the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) and later as an assistant professor at the KREC.

Bommai entered politics in the early 1990s and was elected to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly in 1994. He has served as the Minister for Water Resources, Minister for Home Affairs, and Minister for Urban Development in the Karnataka government. In 2008, Bommai was elected to the Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Indian Parliament, from the Shiggaon constituency.

Bommai is known for his work in the areas of water resources, infrastructure development, and urban planning. He is a strong advocate for the implementation of the Mahadayi River diversion project, which would provide water to the drought-prone regions of north Karnataka. Bommai is also credited with the development of the Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation (KUIDFC), which has played a major role in the development of urban infrastructure in the state.

As Chief Minister, Bommai has promised to focus on the development of the state, particularly in the areas of agriculture, irrigation, and education. He has also pledged to improve the law and order situation in the state and to work towards making Karnataka a corruption-free state.
