Eight Locations in Massachusetts to Shut Down

Company Plans to Close 32 Stores Nationwide

Stop & Shop, a grocery chain owned by Dutch-based Ahold Delhaize, has announced plans to close 32 underperforming stores nationwide, including eight locations in Massachusetts. The closures are part of an effort to improve the company's financial performance.

The Massachusetts stores set to close include:

  • Avon
  • Billerica
  • Brockton (two locations)
  • Fitchburg
  • Haverhill
  • Malden
  • West Roxbury
  • The closures will leave Stop & Shop with more than 350 stores in five states, including 81 in Connecticut, 115 in Massachusetts, and 47 in New York.

In a statement, Stop & Shop said that it is "committed to providing our customers with the best possible shopping experience" and that the closures are "part of our ongoing efforts to optimize our store portfolio and ensure the long-term success of our business."

The closures are expected to impact approximately 1,500 employees. The company said that it will work to help affected employees find jobs at other Stop & Shop locations or with other companies.

The closures come as grocery chains across the country face increasing competition from online retailers and discount stores. Stop & Shop has been struggling to keep up with the competition in recent years, and the closures are seen as an attempt to improve the company's bottom line.

The closures are a reminder of the challenges facing the grocery industry in the 21st century. As more and more consumers turn to online shopping, grocery chains are being forced to adapt or risk becoming extinct.
