Geography
The Netherlands, also known as Holland, is a small, densely populated country in Western Europe. Almost half of its territory lies below one meter above sea level, and about a quarter is below sea level. The highest point in the country is Mount Vaalserberg in the south, with an elevation of 322.5 meters (1,058 feet) above sea level.
Climate
The Netherlands has a temperate maritime climate, with mild winters and cool summers. The average temperature in January, the coldest month, is 2.8 °C (37 °F), while the average temperature in July, the warmest month, is 18.3 °C (64.9 °F). The country receives an average of 750 mm (29.5 inches) of rainfall per year, which is fairly evenly distributed throughout the year.
